Ganga Valley School
Since early 2024, we have been preparing for the construction of a school for children and adolescents from disadvantaged families in remote mountain villages in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, at the foothills of the Himalayas. In this economically weak region, many children and young people have limited access to quality education. Public schools are often of poor quality, and only wealthier families can afford to send their children to distant and expensive private boarding schools. Our partner organization, the Ganga Valley Educational Trust (GVET), has been addressing this issue since 2007 by running a school in the village of Dunda, where around 100 children from kindergarten to grade seven receive good and affordable education.
In cooperation with GVET, we are planning the construction of a new and expanded school building in the neighboring village of Singuni, both to meet the growing demand for GVET’s educational program and to replace the outdated school building with an earthquake-resistant and thermally comfortable structure. The new school will eventually provide education for up to 500 children and young people, from kindergarten to grade twelve.
The project is scheduled to be implemented between 2026 and 2029 in collaboration with the Center for Indian Bamboo Resource and Technology (CIBART) and local craft enterprises, through a participatory planning and design process involving the target communities. By using natural resources and integrating traditional construction techniques, we aim to strengthen local value creation and reduce the ecological footprint of the building. The design will also ensure a comfortable indoor climate without costly air conditioning, thereby lowering maintenance expenses, while solar energy will provide an environmentally friendly and independent power supply.
The land for the school is already owned by GVET. The project will be realized in two to three phases, with total estimated costs of approximately CHF 550,000. Funding will be sought from foundations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein as well as private donations. The modular design allows for flexibility in the construction volume and operation depending on the available financing. The long-term operation and maintenance of the school will be covered by our partner organization GVET.
Seit anfangs 2024 arbeiten wir an den Vorbereitungen für den Bau einer Schule für Kinder und Jugendliche benachteiligter Familien abgelegener Bergdörfer im indischen Bundesstaat Uttarakhand, am Fuss des Himalaya Gebirges. In dieser wirtschaftlich schwachen Gegend haben viele Kinder und Jugendliche unzureichenden Zugang zu qualitativ hochstehender Bildung. Die öffentlichen Schulen sind oft von mangelnder Qualität. Nur wohlhabendere Familien können es sich leisten ihre Kinder in weit entfernte und teure Privatschulen mit Internaten zu senden. Unsere Partnerorganisation, die NGO Ganga Valley Educational Trust (GVET), nimmt sich diesem Problem an und betreibt seit 2007 eine Schule in der Ortschaft Dunda, wo rund 100 Kinder vom Kindergarten bis zur siebten Klasse eine gute und bezahlbare Bildung erhalten.
In Kooperation mit GVET planen wir einen Neubau und eine Erweiterung der bestehenden Schule im benachbarten Ort Singuni, um einerseits der grossen Nachfrage nach dem Bildungsangebot von GVET gerecht zu werden und andererseits das längst renovierungsbedürftige Schulgebäude mit einem erdbebenresistenten und thermisch behaglichen Schulbau zu ersetzen. Die geplante Schule soll künftig bis zu 500 Kindern und Jugendlichen eine schulische Bildung vom Kindergarten bis zum zwölften Schuljahr ermöglichen.
Das Projekt soll zwischen 2026 und 2029 in Kooperation mit dem Center for Indian Bamboo Resource and Technology (CIBART) und lokalen Handwerksbetrieben in einem partizipativen Planungs- und Gestaltungsprozess zusammen mit den Zielgruppen umgesetzt werden. Durch die Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen und den Einbezug traditioneller Baumethoden möchten wir die regionale Wertschöpfung stärken und den ökologischen Fussabdruck des Gebäudes reduzieren. Zudem soll die Schule so geplant werden, dass auch ohne teure Klimaanlagen ein angenehmes Raumklima geschaffen und somit die Unterhaltskosten gesenkt werden können. Die Nutzung von Solarenergie soll eine umweltfreundliche und unabhängige Stromversorgung gewährleisten.
Das Grundstück ist bereits im Besitz von GVET. Die Realisierung soll in zwei bis drei Phasen erfolgen. Die zu erwartenden Gesamtkosten für das Projekt betragen knapp 550'000 CHF. Die Mittel sollen durch Stiftungsbeiträge aus der Schweiz und Liechtenstein sowie private Spenden gedeckt werden. Das Projekt ist modulartig konzipiert, so dass Bauvolumen und Betrieb an den Finanzierungsstand angepasst werden können. Die Kosten für den langfristigen Betrieb und den Unterhalt werden von unserer Partnerorganisation GVET getragen.
